Methodist Ladies’ College parents accuse Kew school of ‘elitism and cronyism’
ONE of Melbourne’s top private girls’ schools has been accused of “elitism and cronyism” in an anonymous Facebook page set up by disgruntled parents.
The school, Methodist Ladies College in Kew, has been attacked by parents for slipping in the VCE academic rankings.
“Unfortunately, academic results and self reliance has taken second place at MLC over the past four years to elitism and cronyism; philosophies more suited to 1917 not 2017,” the post put up on December 20 reads.
The school, which includes actor Cate Blanchett as a past student, came number 38 in VCE rankings this year. Despite fees of nearly $30,000 a year, it hasn’t been in the top 20 since 2011.
The school has had a relatively quiet public profile since the dramatic sacking of former principal Rosa Storelli in 2012, which saw parents and old scholars picket the school.
The father who set up the Facebook page spoke to the Herald Sun, but did not want to be named in order to protect his daughter who is in the junior secondary school.
“The academic results are an objective measurement of how the girls are performing,” he said. “It’s more than one year of average results; when there’s three years in a row, there’s something up”.
The father, whose family has been involved with the school for three generations, said he was not associated with Ms Storelli, although he did call her a “superstar”.
“People have had enough of all the politics and corporate-speak,” he said.
The post says “action needs to be taken forthwith to restore academic excellence and egalitarianism to MLC”.
“In addition, the architects of this disaster and their cronies must be held to account for their hubris, mismanagement and the effect their politicking has had on the students over the past 4 years,” it reads.
Another post on the Facebook page, MLC Stakeholders Action Group, highlighted changes to the school’s uniform policy and said students objected to being monitored by “Traitor” students at the school gates.
Diana Vernon, the school’s principal could not be contacted for comment and the chairman of the board, Tony Peake, declined the opportunity to comment. A source on the school board said concerns about academic results were not shared broadly in the school community.
The Facebook page received 36 likes and had 47 followers as of Thursday afternoon.
